WIMBLEDON 2017: Gutsy Kerber survives huge scare to beat Rogers

Kerber lost to Serena Williams, absent while she prepares for the birth of her first child, a year ago in the final at Wimbledon but was looking to avoid a repeat her 2015 performance by exiting in the third round this time around.

"It's really nice" Rogers told Live 5 News via Skype after her match.

Kerber and Muguruza have met on seven occasions but it is the Spaniard who edges the head-to-head record, having won each of the last four encounters, including one at Wimbledon in 2015.

"I'm really not looking out of the schedule", Kerber said.

The German was the beaten finalist at Wimbledon a year ago but has not been in the same form in 2017 and could lose her place at the top of the rankings at the end of this tournament.

Kerber faces Spanish 14th seed Garbine Muguruza, another former Wimbledon runner-up, for a place in the quarter-finals. I love this kind of match.

The deft Radwanska, the 2012 runner-up to Serena Williams, came back from a set down to beat 19th seed Timea Bacsinszky 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, and now faces eighth seed Kuznetsova who cruised through 6-4, 6-0 over qualifier Polona Hercog. I just go out there, try to play my game. Bulgarian 13th seed Dimitrov had an easy ride into the last 16 when Israeli Sela was forced to pull out at 6-1, 6-1 down after struggling with a right thigh injury that required treatment during the match.

"It was for sure a really important win for me today, especially because it was a really up-and-down match, and I was down at least 2-4 in the second set", Kerber said. She beat Simona Halep at the Australian Open this year and battled hard, saving break points at 5-6 to force a tie-break. I was running better to every single ball.

24 seed, is back into the Round of 16 for the third year on a row after defeating fellow American Alison Riske 6-2, 6-4 in one hour, 15 minutes.

But Kerber had awoken and put a huge amount of pressure on the Rogers serve once again, breaking for the third time in the match to serve at 4-3.

Unseeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia advanced to the fourth round for the first time with a 6-2, 6-1 beating of Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.
