UNESCO recognises Hebron old city as Palestinian World Heritage Site, Israel fumes

Months after the 1967 war, when Israel won the West Bank from Jordan, Jewish settlers came back to the city.

"This irrelevant organisation promotes FAKE HISTORY". It notes the ancient origins of Hebron's Jewish community and that Jews left the city "after the eruption of violence in 1929", an allusion to the massacre of 69 Jews that year by Palestinian nationalists.

The Palestinians hailed UNESCO's decision as a boost for their strategy of a "diplomatic Intifada", or uprising, persuading the worldwide community that the Palestinians require their own sovereign state in East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

"The UNESCO decision on Hebron and the Tomb of Patriarchs is a moral blot". This would, in effect, force UNESCO's World Heritage Committee to meet to discuss their case.

At various times it has been conquered by Romans, Jews, Crusaders and Mamluks.

It is one of the most important religious sites to Muslims and Jews alike.

Hebron is also a stark symbol of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Al-Ayyam said Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian property in the Jenin district in the north of the West Bank, and the Israeli occupation authorities issued 27 stop-work orders against homes and barns in the town of Yatta, in the south of the West Bank.

The decision by Unesco to list the old city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank as a world heritage site has, unsurprisingly, prompted a game of emotional and financial blackmail by Tel Aviv. She would not comment on whether Hebron had been recognised as Palestinian, saying the exact wording would be decided later.

While such votes are usually taken by a show of hands, Poland, Jamaica, and Croatia asked for a secret ballot. "Avraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rivka, Leah, our patriarchs and matriarchs".

In the immediate aftermath of the vote, Shama HaCohen took out his mobile phone and scornfully informed the committee: "It's my plumber in my apartment in Paris".

Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli defense minister of the nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu Party, described Unesco, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, as "a politically biased, disgraceful and anti-Semitic organization".

According to the screenshot, after the vote, at 8:11 p.m., the Arab envoy sent Shama-Hacohen a message via the Whatsapp messaging app: "sorry for today, it was too heated, it is hard to say it was a secret vote..."

Hebron has a long history of violence.

The UNESCO resolution, titled "Occupied Palestine" and sponsored by several Arab countries, used only the Islamic name for a sacred hilltop compound in Jerusalem.

"We'll have a legal body at an worldwide level that will help our efforts to stop any attempts to destroy it", he said.

Secondly, the resolution specified that the sites should also be recognized as endangered. "When I mentioned that this site will be protected under the new classification, it also means UNESCO will not allow the Israelis to do whatever they want there".
