Trump sued for blocking dissenters on Twitter

Seven individuals blocked by Donald Trump's personal Twitter account are suing the president and his communications staff because they say it's unconstitutional for the president to exercise "viewpoint-based blocking".

Since Twitter users who have been blocked can not read or respond to Trump's tweets, the suit argues, blocking users for their political beliefs "imposes a viewpoint-based restriction on. participation in a public forum" and violates the first amendment. They include Rebecca Buckwalter, a fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress, whose account was blocked after she responded to a Twitter posting by Mr. Trump on June 6 in which he disparaged the "fake news" media and said he would not have won the election if he relied on it.

Others to be blocked included Philip Cohen, a University of Maryland sociology professor who called Trump a "Corrupt Incompetent Authoritarian", and Holly Figueroa, a national political organizer and songwriter who was cut off May 28 after posting an image of the pope looking incredulously at Trump, along with the statement: "This is pretty much how the whole world sees you", the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit was filed by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University on behalf of seven people whose Twitter accounts were blocked by the president or his aides. Along with Trump, White House press secretary Sean Spicer and White House social media director Dan Scavino are named in the suit.

"The First Amendment applies to this digital forum in the same way it applies to town halls and open school board meetings".

"Its actions violate the rights of the people who've been blocked and the rights of those who haven't been blocked but who now participate in a forum that's being sanitized of dissent".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The suit also pointed out the National Archives and Records Administration advised the White House that tweets using @realDonaldTrump, like the tweets from @POTUS, are considered officials statements which are preserved under the Presidential Records Act. Gu's tweet was retweeted hundreds of times, according to the filed complaint; about two hours later Gu saw that his account, @eugenegu, had been blocked. "Trump is right. The government should protect the people". Trump had tweeted, and then deleted, a post including the mysterious " covfefe".

It noted that Trump on July 2 tweeted: "My use of social media is not Presidential - it's MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL".

Another plaintiff was identified as Brandon Neely, a Houston police officer. They were cut from his feed because they criticized the president and his policies on the platform. Such blocking, the complaint stated, "imposes an unconstitutional restriction on their right to access statements that defendants are otherwise making available to the public at large".
