Panamagate returns to haunt Nawaz Sharif

Panamagate returns to haunt Nawaz Sharif

In their report, which has been leaked to media, the team alleges Sharif's family accumulated wealth far above its earnings, and says his children, including heir-apparent Maryam Sharif, signed falsified documents created to mask the truth.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif says he believes in rule of law, independence of judiciary and democracy.

The JIT team comprised members of civilian and powerful military bodies, including the Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI). There are now calls for the prime minister to resign, though it appears that he intends to see the court case through. They also recorded statements from witnesses, seven of whom were members of the Sharif family. The report further said Sharif tried to "parry most of the questions" by giving indefinite answers or by stating that "he does not remember, ostensibly to hide facts". Sharif, the son of an industrialist, has denied wrongdoing and said his family's wealth was acquired legally.

Can a computer font just prove the Sharif family guilty?

The daughter of Pakistan's prime minister has become subject of ridicule in her home country after forensic experts cast doubts on documents central to her defence against corruption allegations.

Asif Khawaja, Pakistan's defense minister and one of Sharif's closest aides, earlier said the report was "full of flaws" and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party would contest the JIT findings in the court.

All major opposition political parties have asked him to step down and stay away from power until his name was cleared. Thus, it seems "extremely unlikely" that Sharif would have used the beta font in any official documents, a company representative said. Investigators noticed that documents handed over by the prime minister's daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, were typed up in the font Calibri.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said our bone of contention is not with any party, but anyone against whom evidence is found should be sent home.

JIT analysed that the primary allegations on which the Pakistani Supreme Court had taken knowledge of the Panamagate case, the ownership of Avenfield properties, were very much the same on which an investigation had been authorised by NAB some 17 years ago in 2000.

The cabinet reposed full confidence in the leadership of the prime minister and endorsed his firm decision not to step down.
