Facebook to launch paid news subscription product

The News Media Alliance, which petitioned Congress, charges that Facebook and Google benefit from the work of hundreds of newspapers without fairly compensating publishers.

Roughly 2,000 US' national and local newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, are represented by the News Media Alliance. Right now, Facebook's Instant Articles feature (which loads pages much more quickly directly on Facebook instead of directing you to the publishers' site) lets you skip around some paywalls.

The world's largest social media platform is testing the waters for a subscription-based news product, Campbell Brown, the head of news partnerships at Facebook, said Tuesday at the Digital Publishing Innovation Summit in NY.

The company's news partnerships head Campbell Brown told publishers at an industry event in NY this week that the company is getting ready to test news subscriptions as early as this fall.

Campbell Brown, the head of the social media giant's news partnerships, said Facebook is working on the news product, which would have a paywall. Now publishers are trying to find a way around one of the last barriers to not giving away their content for free: Facebook.

According to Brown, the paywall idea is based on premium and metered plans and has been in the works for a while.

"And that is something we are doing now".

So far, the financial details have yet to be determined, and we don't expect to know the prices per article or subscription costs until October when the paywall finally starts. Until then, enjoy the news on your feed on Facebook while it still is available. AMP has been supporting subscriptions since early 2016, but some publishers have also complained about lagging ad revenue. "We are launching a subscription product".

"But Facebook doesn't always allow the reader to click through to the publisher's website, denying the news website ad revenue from that reader", he stated.

The world's most popular social network is to test a subscription news service which would include a paywall that would block non subscribers from reading more than 10 news stories.

It is unclear, however, how payments will be handled and if Facebook would take a cut of subscription sales.
