Yemeni civilians killed in airstrike

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Wednesday reported that an airstrike carried out by the USA -backed Saudi-led coalition in Yemen killed 20 civilians-including women and children-who were fleeing violence in their home province.

At least seven women and four children were among those killed, they said.

UNHCR said it was "deeply shocked and saddened" by the attack and the reported casualties.

"If there is no accountability, if groups that are fighting think they can use their political influence - and if they're powerful enough and rich enough, then they can get away with killing and injuring children, or bombing schools and hospitals - it sets a really unsafe precedent not just for Yemen but for conflicts around the world", Anning said.

The bombing was part of an air campaign being carried out by the Saudi-led coalition since March 2015.

The UNHCR has said that this attack "demonstrates the extreme danger facing civilians in Yemen, particularly those attempting to flee violence".

Save the Children has warned that if the United Nations fails to include Saudi-led coalition on this year's list, it will set a risky precedent for other conflicts around the world.

The war has been mired in stalemate for most of the last two years, with more than 10,000 civilians killed and three million displaced.

"The coalition claimed that the security of the journalists could not be guaranteed in rebel-controlled areas and advised the three journalists to travel on commercial flights", said Ahmed Ben Lassoued, a spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen.

Another suspected coalition raid in Taez province in May was reported to have killed more than 20 civilians.

"A peaceful political solution to resolve the conflict in Yemen is urgently needed to end civilian suffering", it said.

The coalition, which intervened in the Yemen conflict in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, controls the airspace over Yemen and can prevent any flights made without prior permission.

Saudi Arabia is using British-manufactured weapons in the offensive, sparking failed legal challenge by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade in the High Court.
