Over half of HIV-afflicted on life-saving treatment: UNAIDS

The target numbers are treatment access to 30 million individuals by 2020. The text also revealed a decrease in nearly half of the deaths of that disease in 2016, compared to 2005, a year in which the number increased up to 1.9 million.

"Around 30 percent of people living with HIV still do not know their HIV status, while 17.1 million people living with HIV do not have access to antiretroviral therapy and more than half of all people living with HIV are not virally suppressed", the agency said.

"As we bring the epidemic under control, health outcomes are improving and nations are becoming stronger", UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe said.

Eastern and southern Africa are "leading the way" and have reduced new HIV infections by almost a third since 2010, according to the report.

The UNAIDS report on the global HIV epidemic said the decline was the steepest in Asia and the Pacific. The tb was still in 2016, the first cause of mortality of people living with HIV. AIDS-related deaths in the region have decreased by 36% since 2010. The report suggested that linkages between HIV testing and antiretroviral therapy initiation require strengthening, and that treatment adherence is a challenge. New HIV infections have declined by 29%, including a 56% drop in new infections among children over the same period.

The report released in Paris, where an AIDS meeting will be held this weekend, is a welcome news amid the global AIDS epidemic that has so far killed about 35 million over the past four decades.

"Continued commitment and support from the government, donors, global and national non-government organisations, community networks and people living with HIV groups are crucial to achieving the country's HIV response targets", he said.

Progress against the 90-90-90 targets has, however, been poor in the Middle East and North Africa and in eastern Europe and central Asia, where AIDS-related deaths have risen by 48% and 38%, respectively. More than 40% of the roughly 1.1 million people living with HIV in the United States now receive care through Medicaid, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

"India is the country where most new HIV infections are occurring in the Asia-Pacific region". Experts warned, however, that much of the progress can be undone by growing resistance to HIV drugs.

"Cambodia is to be congratulated for reaching this global target three years before the world's deadline", said Vladanka Andreeva, UNAIDS Cambodia country director.

Significant efforts have also been made to eliminate new infections among children, the report said, with 88 percent of women affected with HIV accessing services for the prevention of mother to child transmission.
