The Congress has sent 44 of its legislators to a resort outside Bengaluru to fend off "poaching" attempts by the BJP ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat, a senior party leader said. The tally since Thursday is five.

Replying to the Congress allegation, Gujarat's deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel reiterated that ruling party has nothing to do with whatever is happening in the Opposition party as it was their internal matter.

The Gujarat unit of the Congress suffered yet another blow today when another party MLA resigned from the Assembly today, taking the total number of legislators to have quit to six.

Congress sources said the party could seek disqualification of those who resign.

The main opposition party in the state also has the support of two NCP legislators and the lone JD (U) MLA. Any increase in its tally here is what the BJP is trying hard ever since it came to power in 2014.

They will be putting up at Clarks Exotica Resorts, which is a 15-minute drive from the Bengaluru airport.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also suggested the Congress leaders approach the Election Commission for redressal of their grievance. The six resignations - three resigned Friday - may hold the key to the third seat.

"According to the information I got, a lot of people from Congress are in favour of Balwantsinh Rajput". Gujarat's richest MLA, Balwantsinh Rajput, who was chief whip of the Congress legislative party, has already joined the BJP. As such, Patel enjoys a clout within the Congress leadership that is matched by no other party leader - with the exception of Sonia and her son, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

Senior Congress leader Naresh Rawal told NDTV the party had been forced to fly out the legislators "since the Gujarat government was harassing them and forcing them to cross over".

Later, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters that the BJP is engaged in horse-trading ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.

Ramsinh Parmar claimed that he did not quit the party keeping the Rajya Sabha polls in mind.

While the writing was on the wall about Congress' leaders in Gujarat heading for a split in Gujarat due to infighting, Rajput's exit might pose a threat to the party's prospects in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. "I will take appropriate decision in coming days", Raghavjee said. "My vote, as I have said earlier too, is reserved for Ahmed bhai (Patel)", he added.
