Russia Retaliates For Sanctions Approval, Hitting At US Diplomatic Corps

The statement comes after Moscow's decision to reduce the number of USA diplomatic staff in Russian Federation and suspend the use of American embassy storage facilities. It added that it was seizing a compound and warehouse used by USA diplomats.

The ministry said the total number of personnel employed in USA diplomatic and consular offices in Russian Federation will be reduced to 455 people.

Putin also spoke about a continuing row between Moscow and Washington which erupted last December when then U.S. President Barack Obama ordered the seizure of Russian diplomatic property in the United States and the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats. The measure also includes a provision that would limit Trump's authority to lift the sanctions unilaterally. Germany's foreign minister said his country wouldn't accept the US sanctions against Russian Federation being applied to European companies. "We have passed the notification back to Washington for review", the statement said.

In a statement on July 28, the ministry outlined retaliatory steps after US lawmakers passed a bill that would impose additional sanctions on Russian Federation and sent it to President Donald Trump for his signature.

According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin is yet to decide on Russia's response to the sanctions bill.

If Trump chooses to veto it, the bill is expected to garner enough support in both chambers to override his veto and pass it into law.

The sanctions have yet to be approved by the Senate or Trump, and a top White House aide said on Thursday that Trump could veto the legislation in order to push for a tougher deal. She did not say whether Trump would sign or veto the measure when it reaches his desk.

Besides angering Moscow, the proposed legislation has upset the European Union, which has said the new sanctions might affect its energy security and prompt it to act, too.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said the new sanctions law "confirms the extreme aggressiveness of the United States in its foreign affairs".

"The new bill uses political means to create a dishonest competitive advantage for the U.S. in the global economy".

Putin said on a visit to Finland on Thursday that Russian Federation was "exercising restraint and patience, but at some moment we'll have to retaliate".

"The principles of trade enshrined in the WTO are also being violated but as you know we are very patient and are being very restrained, but at some point obviously we will have to respond, we can't go on forever tolerating this boorish behavior towards our country", he said.
