Doklam Standoff: Neither China, Nor India Want Conflict or War

Says Chinese expert; claims they will inform Indian foreign ministry before operationBEIJING China is planning a "small scale military operation" to "expel" Indian troops from the Doklam area "within two weeks", an article in a state-run daily here said on Saturday.

The conflict between the two countries in the disputed area, known as "Doklam" in India and "Donglang" in China, began in early June, after Chinese workers had begun building a highway through the area, triggering a protest from Bhutan. Bhutan has protested to China, saying the area belonged to it and accused Beijing of violating agreements that aim to maintain the status quo until the boundary dispute is resolved.

The ongoing face-off in Dokalam between India and China has cast a shadow on the 2017 edition of the Sino-Indian Hand-in-Hand army exercise, scheduled to be held later in the year in China.

India has been urged to take seriously China's position document on India's border troops' trespass, and to immediately and unconditionally withdraw the troops.

"This makes it hard for China or India to back down", said a Beijing-based source who is familiar with the discussions between the two sides.

Desai, a member of the British House of Lords and a renowned commentator on south Asian affairs, linked the Doklam standoff to events in the South China Sea and predicted that the war would be fought in multiple theatres. It said that the Modi-government should be aware of China's military power and should not put India in a situation where has no choice but to "annihilate all Indian troops in the border region". "If the Modi government refuses to stop, it will push its country into a war that India has no power to control", it went on. "We need to give a befitting reply to Pakistan and for this firstly we have to merge Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) with India and secondly every Indian should boycott China made products whether it be mobile, watches, cars, or toys", Ramdev told ANI.

On Thursday, senior diplomat and China's deputy chief of mission at its embassy in New Delhi Liu Jinsong had said that China had notified New Delhi twice - on May 18 and June 8 - regarding road construction in the area out of goodwill, but that there was no response from India at that time. "So, a solution will definitely emerge if we engage in dialogue on bilateral relations", Swaraj said in Rajya Sabha on Friday, August 4. But China has been lashing out at India nearly every day, seeking immediate withdrawal of Indian troops from the area.

An editorial published in the Global Times claimed that the Chinese PLA has "sufficient preparation for military confrontation" and that it would be "a war with an obvious result". It has demanded that Indian troops withdraw before any talks.

India on Wednesday had reiterated that peace and tranquility along Indo-China border is an important prerequisite for smooth development of bilateral relations between the New Delhi and Beijing.

As of the end of July, there were still over 40 Indian border troops and one bulldozer illegally staying in Chinese territory.
