Special prosecutor Robert Mueller asks White House for documents on Flynn

Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly questioning witnesses about whether Flynn's company, Flynn Intel Group, received secret payments from the Turkish government late in 2016.

At a campaign rally in West Virginia on Friday, he dismissed the allegations and investigation as "fake news".

Although the request is not a subpoena, this is the first time the White House has been directly asked to transfer documents to the Mueller's investigation team.

Investigators also want to determine whether Flynn paid a Turkish businessman to help hide the source of the payments, which amounted to $530,000.

Mr Flynn, a former lieutenant general in the USA army, failed to register as a foreign agent when Flynn Intel Group signed a $600,000 contract with Mr Alptekin's Dutch company Inovo BV in August 2016.

Flynn resigned after less than one month in office for failing to fully disclose the details of his December communications with the Russian ambassador in Washington to White House officials.

The Pentagon launched an investigation that will scrutinise Mr Flynn's financial arrangements to determine whether he has failed to disclose payments from Russian and Turkish lobbyists. The document request is one more sign Mueller's team is expanding its investigation beyond Russian Federation to the business dealings of Trump and his team.

The lobbyist's spokeswoman Molly Toomey insisted they were refunds for unfulfilled work, telling the New York Times: "They were legal, ethical and above board".

While Mr Mueller steps up his investigation, Donald Trump has again angrily denied that his campaign team colluded with the Kremlin.

Bharara was sacked by President Trump in March, even though Bharara said Trump invited him, shortly after the November 2016 election, to stay on.
