Jaguars may not let Branden Albert return after retirement, report says

At the time, he released a statement via the team where he wished the Jaguars luck and looked forward to going back to Miami where he would pursue business interests.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that Albert didn't travel with the Jaguars to New England for the team's preseason opener, and that there are "lots moving parts" regarding Albert's future in Jacksonville. He participated in the first three practices and was in the facility working out on fourth day of camp.

The 32-year-old Albert surprised Jaguars coach Doug Marrone last week by walking into his office and saying he planned to retire.

It was never clear why Albert, who was battling second-round draft pick Cam Robinson for a starting job, chose to walk away after nine National Football League seasons.

He skipped all of the offseason conditioning programs for the Jaguars and the team's organized activities due to wanting to sign a new deal with the team.

The Jaguars acquired Albert in a trade with the Dolphins in March.

This has to come as a shock to the Jaguars, who were preparing to potentially start rookie second-round pick Cam Robinson at left tackle following Albert's retirement.

Whether Albert will actually want to play again is anyone's guess.

Given that Albert is also scheduled to make $8.9 million in 2017, the total sum of bonus money and salary was likely too much to walk away from.

The Jaguars are now in Foxborough, Massachusetts, for two days of joint practices with the New England Patriots, and a team spokesman said the team would not comment on the situation.

Albert was the 15th overall pick by Kansas City in 2008. The Dolphins signed Albert in 2014 giving him a signing bonus of $8.5 million.
