Auto hits soldiers on patrol outside Paris, 6 injured

Police in the French capital were hunting the suspect, who officials said struck and injured six soldiers as they left their barracks in the Levallois-Perret region of the city, NBC News reported.

A major police operation is underway as the search for the vehicle widens.

Witnesses described seeing a BMW with one person on board waiting in a cul-de-sac near a building used for soldiers from the Sentinelle operation. Police forces have been deployed to search for the auto and driver, who is on the run, it said.

Police say they are now searching for the suspect and the auto.

The arrest of a man, aged in his late 30s, came hours after a vehicle rammed into soldiers, injuring six.

The mayor of Levallois-Perret, Patrick Balkany, told BFMTV that the vehicle was "pre-positioned" in a small alleyway, waiting for troops from the 35th Infantry Regiment to come out of the building.

The attack occurred outside a military barracks 200 metres from the town hall in Levallois-Perret, on the northeastern edge of Paris.

The security forces in France have also become targets of Islamist inspired acts of violence.

Mr Balkany said he had no doubt that the "disgusting" act was deliberate. "It all happened very quickly".

"Two people were seriously injured and four others were less badly hurt", he said.

"The vehicle did not stop", Balkany said. "It hurtled at them.it accelerated rapidly", he told broadcaster BFMTV.

In February, a man with a machete attacked troops near the Louvre Museum.

"A suspect who was driving in the auto involved in the attack has been arrested on the highway between Paris and Boulogne-sur-Mer", Philippe told lawmakers during a parliamentary session.

"I heard a loud noise, the sound of scraping metal".

The case has been initiated to pursue perpetrators on charges of attempted murder of security forces in connection with a terrorist enterprise.

The city has sustained about a dozen terror attacks since the November 13, 2015, assaults by Islamic State militants that killed 130 people. Six soldiers were injured in the incident that is now under investigation by the French Police and its elite Police Tactical Unit tasked with counter-terrorism. "Me and my wife rushed [outside] and then learned what happened", one man who lives in the neighborhood told Ruptly.

Gerard Collomb, France's minister of the interior, has called the ambush a "deliberate act".

The attack comes after an 18-year-old was arrested at the Eiffel Tower on Saturday for brandishing a knife and shouting "Allahu Akbar".
