Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vents about Trump's 'excessive expectations' regarding legislation

He said part of the reason the Senate is viewed as "underperforming" is because of "artificial deadlines" and "excessive expectations" the president imposes on Congress.

"The two biggest issues we're moving forward with in the first half of the year obviously are repeal and replacing Obamacare and tax reform", McConnell said back in January at the GOP congressional retreat.

Speaking at an event in Kentucky Monday, McConnell expressed frustration with the President's expectations about achieving his administration's agenda.

Trump has been sniping at McConnell for several days on Twitter, a reaction to McConnell's earlier remarks that the president was new to Washington and doesn't realize how hard it is to pass legislation.

The back-and-forth was the latest sign of strained relations between Trump and Republicans in Congress, who have chalked up few victories since January, despite the GOP's control of the White House and both the House and Senate.

In mid-July, Trump sent a series of tweets urging GOP senators to work with McConnell to repeal and replace Obamacare, which he called a "disaster". The report said Trump became "animated" and implored McConnell to continue to push for a repeal of Obamacare.

Alienating the Senate majority leader could make it far more hard for Trump to achieve his legislative goals, which include tax cuts and a boost in infrastructure spending as well as healthcare reform.

"If he has any new statements, I'll be sure to pass them along".

After firing off another tweet at McConnell on Thursday morning, the president also retweeted a poll that asks followers who made for a better president - himself or former President Barack Obama. Tensions over North Korea's advancements to its nuclear program have been escalating, fueled in part by Trump's off-the-cuff remarks that North Korea "will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen". Chris Coons to introduce a measure Thursday that would make it more hard for a president to fire any special counsel - retroactive to Mueller's appointment in May. He added that while he didn't necessarily think this would create more chaos for the political deliberations, it showed that Trump had been cut out of the deliberation.
