Cow deaths: Congress demands removal of Chhattisgarh Animal Husbandry minister

Verma, however, has been promptly held, and according to the police sources quoted in the HT report, "He was arrested on Friday evening after being charged under sections 4 and 6 of Chhattisgarh Agricultural Cattle Preservation act -2004, Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and Section 409 of Indian Penal Code (IPC)".

Speculations are rife that the cows were burried in many trenches in a bid to cover up the the severe incident of neglect.

A government cattle shelter has turned into a death trap for cows in Chhattisgarh.

Rajpur's sarpanch pati Sevaram Sahu alleged that he found many trenches were being dug to bury corpses of cows lying around, which made them feel suspicious.

Almost 173 cows died in about one week at three shelter homes in Chhattisgarh following which nine officials, including two deputy directors, of the state's animal husbandry department have been suspended. Verma is a vice chairman of Jamul Nagar Palika Officials from Gau Sewa Aayog and veterinarians visited the shelter in Dhamda on Saturday and were shocked to learn that Verma runs two more shelters in Bemetara district.

Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhupesh Baghel told newsmen at party's state headquarters here that Congress would stage a demonstration on August 28 in Bemetara against cows' deaths. I had intimated the government many a time that I am not able [to] feed them, but all went in vain. "I am not guilty for the deaths", added Harish Verma.

"Neither the inspection of cow shelter homes nor the auditing of the funds sanctioned to them was being done due to kickbacks".

While the Gau Seva Ayog would register a case in this regard, the malaise has been laid bare in the Chhattisgarh cow shelter deaths episode.

The fresh deaths were also allegedly caused due to starvation and lack of proper care. Real love for animals would never let anyone kill in the name of a fellow creature.
