Indian and Chinese troops clash in Ladakh on Independence Day

The incident occurred at Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh, and was caught on a smartphone camera and shared by Manu Pubby of The Print.

According to the Indian Express, PLA troops "tried to enter the Indian side in two areas - Finger Four and Finger Five - twice between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m". "Such incidents are not in the interest of either side", an MEA spokesperson noted, without specifying the extent of injuries on either side. She said the PLA troops always patrol along the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat will reportedly pay a three-day visit to Ladakh beginning Sunday during which he will take stock of the security preparedness along the border with China besides discussing key operational matters with top commanders, official sources said on Sunday.

"The video clearly vindicates the statement made by the Indian army on August 15".

The incident at Ladakh on August 15 highlights a general decline in border stability between India and China as various confidence-building measures have faltered in the aftermath of the Doklam standoff, which is now in its third month. No weapons are used in the video, however.

Personnel from both sides received minor injuries and the situation was brought under control after the customary banner drill under which both sides hold banners before stepping back to their respective positions. The stand-off had begun after Indian troops stopped PLA from constructing a road in the region from June.

He did not confirm whether the incident involved stone pelting or use of rods, but emphasised that the incident should not be linked with what was happening in any other sector.

Calling it a sensitive issue, Kumar added that peace and tranquillity are important factors for smooth development of bilateral relations. "I am not an astrologer, so can not predict", he quipped, when asked when he foresaw a resolution to the faceoff.
