Hurricane Harvey is rerouting cruise ships

The mayor of the popular Texas Gulf Coast city of Galveston says the city is expected to be inundated with water from Hurricane Harvey.

The cruise line said passengers could get off the two diverted ships, the Freedom and the Valor, in New Orleans, but advised against that in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

Hurricane Harvey has stranded four cruise lines with 20,000 passengers stranded likely until next week, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Currently, the Carnival Freedom and Carnival Valor are at sea in the middle of their voyage. But the port closed earlier in the week in advance of the Category 3 storm's arrival and it's unclear when it will reopen.

Officials said the Port of Galveston shut down Friday. Carnival Breeze is currently docked in Cozumel and will now overnight there.

As a result, the Carnival Freedom and Valor, each with capacity for about 2,980 passengers at double occupancy, are remaining a "safe distance" from the storm at sea and skipping a stop in Galveston scheduled for Saturday, Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said.

The other ship, the Carnival Breeze, was slated to return to the port on Sunday, but remains at a dock in Cozumel, Mexico. "Our intention is to keep with our original schedule for our return to Galveston on Sunday".

The duration of your cruise will have to be shortened and the itinerary modified.

"We're working with the Coast Guard and the pilots and the cruise line to try to minimize the impact of the storm on the cruise ships", Simons said.

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas did sail into a storm off the Atlantic coast previous year, forcing the ship to turn around, and subjecting the passengers to the consequences of high wind and waves.

Carnival said they would give future cruise credits to anyone who chooses not to sail. To stay up to date, please sign up for text alerts by texting the codes below to CRUISE (278473).

Both ships would make stops in New Orleans to refuel and resupply and guests would be allow to leave, but would be encouraged to stay aboard and return to Galveston, officials said.

Royal Caribbean officials did not respond to a request for comment Friday.
