Matt Reeves Clarifies The Batman's place in the DC Movie Universe

"Jeez, what'd I miss, guys...?" one tweet began. "Batman will be BATMAN..." The Batman will be a standalone story but he meant that it wouldn't have cameos for Superman, Wonder Woman, and it wouldn't be bogged down by being set in this universe.

"Since Matt Reeves' solo Batman movie "#The Batman" has been in the news, people have doubted whether or not #Ben Affleck would play the Caped Crusader in the film. "When they [Warner Bros.] approached me, what they said was, it's a standalone".

The duo are in final negotiations to pen and helm an untitled movie project centering on Batman villains Joker and Harley Quinn. Well the movie's director has put all your worries away. Shazam! is supposed to be the next DCEU film in the pipeline, but it has gone through a major scope change with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam no longer being part of it, and still doesn't have a lead star cast. The point of a cinematic universe is to tie the narrative together, so that each movie progresses the wider story.

Rumors have been circulating since mid-July that Ben Affleck won't be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne in director Matt Reeves' The Batman. Maybe in order to get Reeves onboard, his Batman movie will be included as part of this Elseworlds-style banner. Naturally, when the quote from Reeves surfaced, we all thought The Batman would be made in the same alternate universe-vein as this Joker origin film - something, by the way, which has not been confirmed by Warner Bros. reps.

While THR may have corrected their story on The Batman, another report seems to suggest that the news may have been right all along. "Batman is the coolest [expletive] part in any universe, DC, Marvel", Ben said during the event. As with most stories concerning the blockbuster superhero franchise, it's best to take this story with a grain of salt until confirmation from Warner Bros. or DC comes. Recently, director Matt Reeves spoke about the DC project on "The Business" podcast hosted by THR's Kim Masters.

Justice League opens in theaters on November 17th, 2017. But he's not going to do that movie, I don't think. Since he joined, Reeves has made it clear that he is interested in making his vision of The Batman, as he deems fit.

The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves has become the latest super hero movie to have a rocky start in development.
