Rep. Griffith: Mexico Will Pay 'Part of the Tab' for Border Wall

Rep. Griffith: Mexico Will Pay 'Part of the Tab' for Border Wall

President Johnson liked to say that Congress eventually got the best of every president - and he was talking in an era when his own party, the Democrats, controlled both chambers.

The former long-time Missouri senator and Episcopal priest wrote a Washington Post op-ed yesterday detailing these views against Trump, ultimately writing he feared that the party will lose the unifying history they gained from Abraham Lincoln - the GOP's first elected candidate.

There's one crucial difference between 2013 and today, however: Republicans control the executive and legislative branches of government. It is, Democratic aides will remind you, Republicans who control all levers of the federal government.

An angry Congress can accelerate televised investigations into an administration, can stifle any progress on legislation and send the president bills that he is either forced to veto or sign because of political pressure, and they can use their own smaller bully pulpits on television to discredit the President and drag down his approval ratings, which, in Trump's case, are already low.

Meanwhile, the White House says President Trump is monitoring more pressing matters - Hurricane Harvey. He will be pummeled either way. If two-thirds of Republicans would continue to back Trump regardless of what comes out of the Mueller probe, most House Republicans will never feel sufficiently protected from potential primary challengers to risk initiating impeachment proceedings. His unorthodox and controversial style of politics creates more political incentives for Republicans to take a stand against his presidency.

- President Donald Trump picked a new fight on Thursday with his fellow Republicans, saying congressional leaders could have avoided a "mess" over raising the US debt ceiling if they had taken his advice. But by threatening the shutdown over the wall funding at this stage, it is Trump who has fenced himself in. Whether that legislative strategy would have worked can not be known.

In the latest in a stream of criticisms that could undermine his aims to cut taxes, pass a budget and rebuild infrastructure, Trump sought to blame party leaders if Congress fails to agree to raise the cap on how much the federal government may borrow.

FreedomWorks is also circulating a memo warning that other White House priorities could be threatened.

"Trump is spoiling for a fight and the [conservative house] Freedom Caucus haven't had a fight for a while". Once the limit is reached, Congress must raise it or the government can not continue borrowing money and would default, or be unable to pay its bills. The government takes in about $3.4 trillion dollars per year in revenue. We know Trump exaggerates and lies and misrepresents; we know that his hyperbole is just that. That is why he has such a good chance of prevailing in this fight.

When further pressed by ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Cecilia Vega as to how such a claim doesn't represent a concession that American taxpayers will pay for the wall, Sanders again demurred.

The president has promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, reform our tax laws, get rid of counterproductive regulation and rebuild our infrastructure. "We're going to push forward and make sure that the wall gets built" is saying nothing while trying to appear like you are saying something.

A CBS News poll earlier this month found that 61 percent of Americans oppose Trump's proposal for a Mexican border wall. Victory is at hand, so let us grasp it together.
