Tillerson on Trump's Charlottesville response: 'The president speaks for himself'

Appearing to suggest that President Trump did not represent "the American people's values" after the recent violence in Charlottesville, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Sunday "the president speaks for himself".

Does that make it harder for you to push American values around the world when some foreign leaders question the President's values?

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson responds to the strongly worded statement from the United Nations condemning the Trump administration for "failure at the highest political level to unequivocally reject and condemn the racist violent events and demonstrations".

Wallace quoted from Gorka's resignation letter, which said that "a crucial element of the presidential campaign has been lost" because Trump's speech laying out his policy for Afghanistan did not mention "radical Islamic terrorism".

"And the President's values?" anchor Chris Wallace asked.

That was a reference to remarks Tillerson made August 18 about inclusiveness and tolerance in a discussion of racial diversity and American values. Trump's initial response to the white supremacist protests was to denounce violence and hatred "on many sides", which eventually gave way to a prepared statement specifically denouncing neo-Nazis.

Tillerson replied, "I've spoken".

Tillerson said Gorka - who sided with many of Trump's most far-right views - was "completely wrong" to encourage the President to frame America's wars on terror as a battle against "radical Islam".

Trump's response was celebrated in white nationalist circles, but drew criticism from across the mainstream political spectrum and - with the intervention of a United Nations anti-racism committee - from around the world.

But he preferred to refer to a speech delivered while the United States was in the midst of controversy, seeming to stand out of the president's stance.

As president, Trump is a part of the American government, but Tillerson's comments show the lengths that even his own Sec. of State and State Department are going to in their efforts to isolate themselves from this president. "And those who embrace it poison our public discourse and they damage the very country that they claim to love". "This administration can and must do better in consistently and unequivocally condemning these groups and do everything we can to heal the deep divisions that exist in our communities", Cohn told the Financial Times.

"We express America's values from the State Department".
