Box-office eclipse: Hollywood has worst weekend in years

Overall, the box office will hit about $65 million this weekend, making it at least the lowest since September 5, 2014, when Guardians of the Galaxy topped the competition with $10.3 million in ticket sales. While much of this can be chalked up to Saturday's boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor and Hurricane Harvey impacting the Texas markets, these numbers are still indicative of a rough few months for Hollywood.

An already slow August came to a screeching halt at the multiplex, where no major new releases were unveiled.

The "Hitman's Bodyguard" will top all movies again, taking in $10.1 million at 3,377 theaters this weekend while "Annabelle: Creation" came in second at $7.4 million in 3,565 movie spots, Variety reported.

The entire slate of films grossed only about $65 million, the lowest total since September 2001. The biggest debut was something called Leap! which was originally a French animated film released past year in Paris and has just a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Creation, like the rest of the Conjuring horror universe, was a pretty cheap film to make, on the order of $15 million, so you can expect Warner Bros. Next week is expected to be just as bad: No new wide releases are scheduled for Labor Day weekend. This time past year, the horror film "Don't Breathe" got some traction and opened to a solid $26.4 million. To put in perspective how paltry that is, Beauty and the Beast had an opening weekend of $175 million by itself earlier this year.

Fourth place went to "Wind River", another Weinstein production, at $4.4 million, improving on its 10th-place finish last week. "Logan Lucky" will barely have the edge over "Wind River" with almost identical $4 million weekends by end of day Sunday. The summer as a whole is running 14 percent behind a year ago - and the deadly quiet August is a big reason.

However, that figure could drop down to somewhere in the $9 million range when final figures are released.
