Holder hails Headingley win as just reward for West Indies

After limiting England to 258 all out in their first innings - Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel taking four wickets apiece - West Indies kept their noses in front for the most part and a decisive 144-run partnership between Hope and Kraigg Brathwaite on the final day followed their 246-run union in the first innings.

When Ali came to the crease, England had just lost three wickets in six overs to offspinner Roston Chase and was 327-7 and just 158 runs ahead.

Hope, who scored 147 in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 118 in the second innings to take his side to a five-wicket win.

Brathwaite had also been close to the same slice of history, but his perishing opened the door for Hope to take his place in the record books - his double standing alone in the 534-game history of first-class action at Headingley.

They resumed on five without loss after England captain Joe Root had declared late on Monday with England 490 for eight in their second innings.

With England having set a formidable target - the Windies started the day needing 317 with all wickets intact - on a turning pitch and under cloud cover, the two young batsmen negotiated their testing examinations superbly.

Coming into the second Test at Headingley, the visitors were under pressure.

West Indies, hopeful at tea of pushing for a first test victory in England since 2000, was completely demoralized at stumps. We fought really hard, we knew we needed this win to keep alive the series. "I'm very proud of them", West Indies coach Stuart Law told Sky Sports.

Moeen Ali was operating from the Kirkstall Lane End.

The Windies opener had only four to his name when he edged Stuart Broad to first slip and although the ball flew to Cook, it is a chance he would usually snaffle.

Their nerves were settled somewhat when Chase was caught brilliantly by substitute fielder Mason Crane, diving away to his left, at mid-on off Woakes.

He was also the first West Indies batsman to score hundreds in both innings of a Test in England since Gordon Greenidge at Old Trafford in 1976. Soon after, Hope reached his hundred and the pair carried on without much fuss - although Blackwood hit Broad for another six - to within two runs of victory when Blackwood tried to finish it in style off Moeen but was stumped for 41.

"(Hope) played exceptionally well - on the fifth day, against high-quality bowling, it was a great knock", said Root, whose two fifties in the match were eclipsed by Brathwaite and Hope.
