Lions Make QB Matthew Stafford Highest-Paid Player In NFL History

Despite not having a playoff victory on his resume' and starting every game since 2011, Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford has signed a five-year contract extension worth $27 million per season.

In his first eight seasons, Stafford has been paid $110.7 million (pre-tax) by the Lions.

The Lions missed the postseason for nine consecutive years prior to Stafford's arrival in 2009, and have amassed a 51-58 record with the 6-foot-3, 226-pound quarterback under center.

A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Stafford's deal is expected to guarantee him a record $92 million, including a $50 million signing bonus. That would surpass the five-year deal that pays $25 million annually to Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who signed his contract last month. In his career, he's led 28 game-winning drives, including an National Football League single-season record eight last season.

The problems come in when you are talking about the bottom line and where Stafford plays, the NFC North. Quinn has done what looks like solid work to protect Stafford, rebuilding 80 percent of his front wall in just two offseasons.

Smith did not hold back when criticizing Matthew Stafford's record-breaking contract.

On Monday, the Lions and Stafford made that long-term possibility a reality. But the truth is the Lions are closer to the promised land with Stafford as their quarterback than without, and that's why this deal had to get done.

One knock on Cousins: zero playoff wins. You can call him Even Stafford, and he's a fitting focal point for a team that, over his career, has climbed out of the dumpster and into occasional contention but has never been a real threat.
