Sen. Cruz: Hurricane Harvey Not Time For 'Political Sniping'

They remember the devastation all too well.

Flooding has damaged or destroyed thousands of homes, crippled infrastructure, washed away businesses and left the economic future of the region under a cloud.

Concannon said that more New Jersey volunteers are expected to leave for the affected area within the coming days. "What are you going to do?"

Trump has promised to extend federal assistance to help respond to the hurricane but has not commented in any detail.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said, "the congressional members in Texas are hypocrites", but pledged support; Rep. Pete King of Long Island tweeted, "I won't abandon Texas the way Ted Cruz did NY;" and Rep.

"Ted Cruz and Texas cohorts voted vs NY/NJ aid after Sandy but I'll vote for Harvey aid", King tweeted.

"As Americans, we come together during times of crisis and today New Jersey's heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the people of Texas at this very hard time.During superstorm Sandy, emergency and law enforcement response contingents from around the country came to our aid", Mr Christie said in a statement.

"I won't abandon Texas the way Ted Cruz did New York", King wrote. In fact, the Congressional Research Service actually issued a report showing that virtually all of the relief funds were related to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

New Jersey's emergency response team deployed to help with the Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts crossed into Texas overnight, according to NJ Task Force 1's Facebook page. It also includes a whopping $150 million for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to dole out to fisheries in Alaska and $2 million for the Smithsonian Institution to fix museum roofs in DC.

During that debate, they voted for an amendment that would have cut domestic spending to pay for the emergency funding.

PolitiFact ruled an answer similar to Cruz's about the pork in the Sandy bill as false.

However, history also cuts in the other direction.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster fund now contains more than $3 billion, but FEMA on Monday said response to Harvey is "quickly drawing down" disaster balances.

On Monday, Trump pledged that the government would take "rapid" action to fund disaster relief. The budget also eliminates funding for an ongoing effort to improve and redraw the nation's flood maps.

We were the disaster that was the longest in waiting in terms of getting federal aid, and I hope that's not what happens to the folks in Texas from Harvey, and I can tell you this.

This time around, Congress must do better.

"Hurricane Harvey destruction is severe".

The death toll from the storm rose to eight, and federal, state and local officials said Houston and the surrounding community will likely need years to recover. Disasters and emergencies are just that ... disasters and emergencies.
