Walter Becker, co-creator of Steely Dan, dead at 67

He died Sunday at the age of 67, according to his personal website.

Fagen described his bandmate on Sunday as "cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically amusing".

One of the founders of U.S. band Steely Dan, Walter Becker has died aged 67.

No official cause of death has been listed, and the status of Steely Dan's upcoming tour dates is now unknown.

Becker was careful to distance his music from the "fusion" wave that was taking shape in jazz at the time. Two Against Nature was a critical and commercial success, going platinum and winning the Album of the Year Grammy.

Their first album as Steely Dan, "Can't Buy Me a Thrill" was released in 1972, and featured both "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In the Years". The band sold 40m albums in all.

They reunited in 2000 to release Two Against Nature, and the band was elected to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame the following year. If you're a Steely Dan fan you have to check out the Aja documentary. insane.

As Pitchfork notes, Becker recently had an operation that prohibited him from touring with bandmate and co-founder Donald Fagen, as revealed in an interview with Billboard earlier this month.

In addition to Donald Fagen and Cameron Crowe, many other stars paid tribute to the late Steely Dan legend, including singer Ryan Adams, who said Becker changed his life with his music.
