Trentin Claims His Third Win At The Vuelta A Espana

Chris Froome extended his overall lead in La Vuelta after Miguel Ángel López, the Colombian rider, won the short but sharp 129-kilometre 15th stage from Alcalá la Real to Sierra Nevada.

Polish rider Rafal Majka took the stage by an impressive margin of 27 seconds, picking up his first win at La Vuelta to go with three stage victories at the Tour de France, where he was King of the Mountains in 2014 and past year.

"I'm delighted to have won in Calar Alto and here", said Lopez. I felt good form the beginning, I was climbing easy.

Froome pulled away from his rivals on the Puig Llorenca climb to win the stage by four seconds, and by adding bonus seconds he led by 36 seconds overall at that point.

Former Vuelta victor Alberto Contador shook up the race when he attacked from distance.

Ahead, Julian Alaphilippe led the field into the last kilometre, where an animated Christ Froome could be seen urging Gianni Moscon to go for the Stage win, safe in the knowledge he would make it over the line unscathed ahead of tomorrow's special-category summit at Sierra de la Pandera. Esteban Chaves fell to fifth behind Ilnur Zakarin.

"It's an fantastic feeling to finish off today and still to be the leader of three competitions - the red, the white and the green jersey as well - and to have survived a stage like today. I was a bit afraid at the beginning - I spent a lot of energy and had to sprint like 100 times just to get in the breakaway", Polish rider Marczynski told reporters after doubling his grand tour stage win tally.

"It was hard to keep up with the pace because we were going very fast ahead and in the middle part, it would have been quite comfortable in the main group behind", he added.

"Again a really big thank you to my team for the work they did today".

The 2017 Vuelta de España finishes in Madrid on September 10.
