DACA program rescinded as protesters rally

Immigration advocates say his move to end DACA is cold hearted but his base is accusing Mr. Trump of punting on a core campaign promise, " reported Kristen Welker. But it wasn't the President, it was Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The Penn State College Democrats tweeted a statement Tuesday evening in response to the Trump administration's decision.

Trump's decision to eliminate DACA adds to a slew of anti-immigrant policies his administration has embraced, from the expanded border wall to stepped up ICE raids to the Muslim travel ban.

Sessions argued the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects almost 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the USA as children would be unlikely to withstand a promised court challenge from 10 state attorneys general, led by Texas.

"The Department of Justice has carefully evaluated the program's constitutionality and determined it conflicts with our existing immigration laws", she said.

In front of the cameras on Tuesday, Sessions sounded much like his old self.

"Sadly, with this decision we are betraying these values, dimming the hopes of these young people, and, because of it, are less as a nation", Wester said in a written statement. "The compassionate thing to do is end the lawlessness, (and) enforce our laws".

Now there will be a winding down of DACA "to create a time period for Congress to act - should it so choose", Sessions said. "So by canceling it, Trump has stepped in some deep daca", he joked.

The White House has defended the decision to rescind DACA.

Trump's announcement came the same day as a deadline set by Republican state officials who said they would challenge DACA in court unless the administration rescinded it. Administration officials argued the program was on flimsy legal footing - and said that allowing the lawsuit to proceed would have thrown it into far more chaos than phasing it out.

Harvard said it does not consider immigration status as part of its admissions and financial aid process. "To deport them to countries they do not know would be nothing less than cruel".

Peter Nunez, former USA attorney: "The pro-dreamers, the pro-illegal alien crowd, whatever he did they were going to be opposed to".

Once current DACA status expires for current recipients, they could be subject to deportation proceedings if detained, but government officials said no current beneficiaries would be affected before March 5, 2018.

Giving Congress six months to act adds immigration reform, past attempts at which have ended in deadlock, to an already packed legislative agenda for the remainder of the year. "But now there is more to do, and the president has called on Congress to act", he said.

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp said on Tuesday the White House decision will impact the nation's economy significantly.

"The Department of Homeland Security urges DACA recipients to use the time remaining on their work authorizations to prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States - including proactively seeking travel documentation - or to apply for other immigration benefits for which they may be eligible", the document reads. Lawyers say President Donald Trump's actions violate federal law and the equal protection guarantee of the Constitution. The former Democratic member of Congress noted that about a quarter of DACA recipients or 220,000 people reside in California. "And really, we have no choice, we have to be able to do something, and I think it's going to work out very well".
