Narendra Modi meets Myanmar's state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi

State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi said, "There are many areas in which we can cooperate".

They also called for setting up a special fund to help the Rohingya seeking refuge in Bangladesh, suspending diplomatic relations with Myanmar, boycotting Myanmarese goods, and to contact the OIC and the United Nations to find an immediate solution to the problem.

India has in the past helped provide humanitarian assistance in refugee camps set up in Rakhine province following earlier clashes - always carefully ensuring that its aid reached both the Buddhist and Rohingya Muslim communities.

"When it comes to finding a solution to a special issue, we hope that all stakeholders can work together towards finding a peaceful solution which while respecting the unity and territorial integrity of Myanmar", he said. Myanmar also vowed not to allow any insurgent group to utilise its soil to undertake hostile acts against India, the statement said.

Suu Kyi made the comments in a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Efe news quoted her office as saying.

This is Modi's first bilateral visit to Myanmar.

The Myanmar leader thanked Modi for his support against the "terror threat" her country faces.

In the health care sector, the Foreign Secretary said India has upgraded three hospitals in Myanmar, including in Yangon and Sittwe.

Some Western critics have suggested the Nobel Peace Prize she won in 1991 as a champion of democracy be revoked. The Prime Minister had visited the country back in 2014 to attend the ASEAN-India Summit.

Prior to this, Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial reception at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw, as he arrived on a two-day visit to Myanmar.
