Born Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter leaving magazine

Graydon Carter, editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, announced today that he is stepping down from his role at the magazine after a 25-year run.

The famous editor, known for his influence on the magazine and entertainment world as well as his glamorous celebrity coverage, said he plans to leave the publication in December to start what he termed as a "third act". "I want to leave while it's in vibrant shape, both in the digital realm and the print realm".

Fox News reached out to Vanity Fair but did not receive comment.

It's unclear who will replace Carter, though speculation about potential successors was already in full-swing immediately following the news.

Though they were once friendly enough that Carter attended one of Trump's weddings, the president has repeatedly slammed Carter in interviews and on social media, tweeting repeatedly about Carter, his restaurants, and his magazine.

While Carter has a storied career in journalism, unmasking the key source in the Watergate scandal, bolstering the publication's elite status, and fostering a close relationship with the powerful industries the magazine covered, Carter's long-simmering feud with one famous NY celebrity businessman became newly relevant in recent years. Their mutual animosity dates back long before the 2016 election.

An interesting and possibly unrelated sidebar to Carter's departure is the quiet announcement that more layoffs and "structural changes" are coming to VF's parent company Condé Nast, the second such announcement in a year.

In 2014, he was elected to the American Society of Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame. Sounds nice. Another fun fact: Graydon Carter considers himself a "glorified maître d'" at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and will not be attending in the future.

Upon leaving the magazine, Carter will spend six months in France with his family, according to Kamp.
