Gucci, Dior and Louis Vuitton officially ban size zero models

In February French model Victoire Dauxerre revealed her modelling struggles in the book Size Zero: My Life As A Disappearing Model.

"Brands of both groups commit to working exclusively with models able to present a valid medical certificate, attesting to their good health and ability to work, obtained less than six months before the shooting or the fashion show".

The new charter says that female models must be at least a French size 32 (equivalent to a United Kingdom size 4 or a U.S. 2) in future.

The charter also commits company executives to banning size 32 for women and size 42 for men from their casting requirements. Earlier this year the French government voted through a law requiring models to have a medical certificate confirming they were not dangerously underweight.

"The "fit" model begins the fashion process: designer outfits are created around a live, in-house skeleton", writes in The Vogue Factor. I really do. I think it's absolutely right that this should happen.

For more than 20 years, campaigners have urged major brands to take cognisanse of their influence on impressionable young men and women, and actively discouraged agencies from hiring models with a distinctly emaciated look.

They can't work from 10:00 p.m.to 6:00 a.m.

For those who do end up getting cast, though, they'll supposedly find a spread of food and drinks that comply with their dietary requirements, along with "useful information to maintain a healthy diet throughout the working day".

The industry has drawn severe criticism for promoting an environment that nearly encourages eating disorders, Reuters reported.

"The suggestion that the fashion industry is the "cause" of eating disorders oversimplifies the issue".

Two luxury French fashion powerhouses have joined forces to stop using ultra-thin models in catwalk shows and photoshoots.

"Equally it's important to remember, that eating disorders are mental illnesses and you can not necessarily "see" them - it would be unsafe to assume someone did or didn't have an eating disorder based exclusively on whether they appear to be "underweight", "overweight", or "normal".

As a hugely powerful industry the fashion world has a duty of care both to the models it employs and the wider world informed by the imagery we produce. This will have them offering a dedicated psychologist/therapist to them during their hours of work.

"We hope to be a source of inspiration for the whole sector, to provoke real change in the working conditions of models in the fashion industry".

It comes after France passed laws aimed at preventing excessively thin models from working. "The wellbeing of models is of great importance to us", declared LVMH board member Antoine Arnault.
