Israel bombs strategic Syrian base

Israel bombs strategic Syrian base

The attack on the Syrian facility came a day after United Nations war crimes investigators said that Syrian forces used chemical weapons more than two dozen times during the country's civil war.

During an interview with an Israeli radio program, Lieberman said that Israel is not interested in a military operation in Syria.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has rarely confirmed or commented on such strikes.

The missiles were fired from Lebanese airspace at 2.42 a.m. local time, state media reported, quoting the Syrian military.

A few hours after the attack, the Syrian Army warned that there will be "dangerous repercussions", calling the airstrike an aggressive move that threatens the "security and stability in the region".

Israeli jets have reportedly bombed a Syrian government facility near Hama associated with the Assad regime's chemical weapons programme, according to early reports in Arab and Israeli media.

The latest attack comes just two days after the Syrian army's victory over the Islamic State in the city of Deir Ezzor.

According to Reuters, an Israeli army spokeswoman declined to discuss reports of a strike in Syria, saying that the military did not comment on operational matters.

Iran along with Hezbollah are allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a civil war that has ravaged the country, killing hundreds of thousands.

Air strikes kill two people at the facility in western Mysaf town where the regime has been accused of developing chemical weapons.

"I hope for Assad that he's not taking any steps that might find him in a very bad situation", Amidror said, speaking to reporters in a phone briefing organized by the Israel Project.

Israel's repeated strikes, as well as the US's in April, have called into question the efficacy of advanced Russian S300 and S400 air defence systems that were first shipped to Syria in 2013.

Moreover some unconfirmed Lebanese reports said Israel also struck a convoy belonging to Hezbollah.

"The attack sent 3 important messages: Israel won't allow for empowerment and production of strategic arms". He said those killed and wounded were Syrians, adding that it was not immediately clear if there were casualties among Iranian and Hezbollah operatives.
