Korean Casualties Reported in Mexico Quake

At least 32 people are reported dead in Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco after the 8.4-magnitude quake that struck last night at 11:49pm and continued for a minute and a half.

Luis Felipe Puente, head of Mexico's national emergency services agency, said two people were killed by the hurricane, which came ashore in Veracruz state, pelting the region with intense rains and winds.

Hardest hit was Juchitan, a Oaxaca state city where 36 people died when the magnitude 8.1 quake toppled buildings. But they warned that those figures remain preliminary.

The quake struck off the Pacific coast of the country just before midnight Thursday, toppling buildings and sending thousands of residents fleeing from their homes.

The quake shook a large swath of the country and was felt as far north as Mexico City, some 800 kilometers from the epicenter, where people ran from their homes as buildings trembled and swayed.

The quake triggered a 1-meter-high tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but there were no reports of tsunami damage.

Tsunami waves have been measured off Mexico's Pacific coast after a major quake.

On Friday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto ordered three days of mourning in the aftermath of the most powerful natural disaster to hit the country in a century.
