AAA: Gas prices up 7 cents this week

Motorists can find current gas prices along their route with the free AAA mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android.

The average retail price in the capital city for the past two days remains lower than the national average of $2.65, which has risen 1.8 cents per gallon in the past week, according to GasBuddy's website.

State of Tennessee- $2.59, up 2.9 cents per gallon from last week's $2.56.

The price action suggests the market was unable to sustain earlier strength on the daily chart as weakening demand off of hurricane activity more than offsetting any potential loss of production.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, says prices appear to have peaked in the last week.

For metro Albany, the price represented an increase of 9.2 cents in a week. That's 30.4 cents higher than a month ago and 48.1 cents higher than a year ago.

Prices had already been on the upswing thanks to Hurricane Harvey closing down a significant amount of America's refinery capacity in Texas when Hurricane Irma stormed into view, packing Interstate 75 with Florida residents fleeing north. Harvey also forced the temporary shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, which delivers much of Georgia's gasoline.

The national average increased by 1.8 cents to $2.65 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.

"Motorists shouldn't expect to see any impact from Irma on gasoline prices due to the path being a considerable distance from sensitive areas of the energy sector", DeHaan said. "But as many Americans are now acutely aware, the impact on gas prices can outlive a storm, especially one like Harvey". Susan Hiltz, a spokesperson with the auto club, said that's up seven cents from last week and 48 cents from the same time past year.
