In Monday's attack, the police convoy was travelling along the road between el-Arish and Qantara when a suspect vehicle tried to break through it, according to an interior ministry statement.

Terror attacks in Egypt used to focus on police and military men in North Sinai before spreading nationwide and targeting the Coptic minority as well, with majority claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the regional Islamic State (IS) militant group.

At least 26 Egyptian soldiers were killed or wounded on July 7, 2017, in attacks on checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula.

It was the deadliest attack in the northern Sinai in months. Militants detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, destroying three armoured vehicles and a signal-jamming vehicle.

The attack turned into a gunfight and the militants also opened fire on ambulance workers, injuring four, the sources told Reuters.

An anonymous security source told Al-Ahram that three militants have been killed in the attack as well. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

According to the state news agency MENA, security forces entered a gun battle with militants in the vicinity of the blast site and managed to slay several of them.

In December 2016, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi named the 22-year-old Mahmoud Shafiq as the suicide bomber who attacked a church attached to Egypt's main Coptic Church in Cairo, killing more than 25 people.

Egypt accuses Hasm of being a militant wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group it outlawed in 2013. Police said the militants had sneaked into Cairo from the volatile northern Sinai.

The ambush came a day after authorities said they had caught a cell planning attacks in the capital, Cairo.
