Federation Internationale de Football Association looks set to lift ban on poppies

The annual stand-off between Fifa and the Home Nations' football teams about wearing poppies is set to end, as the world's governing body considers allowing a change to its current rules.

"It is completely right that footballers and fans alike should be able to wear poppies with pride, as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our serviceman and women". According to the BBC, the German FA has no objections to the poppy being used.

The sanctions caused outrage in Britain, with prime minister Theresa May labelling FIFA's ruling "utterly outrageous".

The Guardian reported that those fines are yet to be paid and will be wiped if the proposed change to the rule is approved by Fifa and the International Football Association Board, the independent guardian of the game.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were all fined by the governing body a year ago for using poppies to commemorate Armistice Day.

Iran has been fined for "religiously motivated displays" during a match.

An 11-month investigation was launched after England appealed against their £35,000 fine for flaunting strict instructions not to display the emblems at the World Cup qualifier against Scotland on November 11 previous year.

The document says political slogans are "less clear", adding: 'When commemorating a significant national or worldwide event, the sensibilities of the opposing team (including its supporters) and the general public should be carefully considered'.

"It is recommended that disputes relating to slogans, statements or images are resolved prior to a match/competition taking place".

England and Scotland wore black armbands with a poppy during their Armistice Day clash in November, 2016.

The new wording now expressly forbids only certain slogans and images - those representing individual people, parties, governments, political acts, discriminatory organisations or groups who actions are likely to offend.

England is planning to play Germany in a friendly at Wembley around Armistice Day, assuming Gareth Southgate's side doesn't have to contest a playoff to qualify for the World Cup.
