Megyn Kelly shows a softer side on 'Megyn Kelly Today' debut

Megyn Kelly shows a softer side on 'Megyn Kelly Today' debut

Airing immediately following "Today" on NBC, "Megyn Kelly Today" will move its host out of the political arena and more toward the lighter side of the morning show world: human interest stories. "It's everywhere and it's gotten so dark and I'm over it".

Most of the episode devolved into an intentionally meta hall of mirrors, inviting the audience to admire Kelly as much as Kelly admires Kelly - a morning TV show about the birth of a morning TV show. It premiered Monday on NBC in the 9 a.m. hour of the "Today' show, proving only that the experiment is far from successful", read The Washington Post's scathing review.

Her new NBC program appears to be as directionless as the first. "We will not be doing that", Kelly joked at the beginning of her hourlong program. Instead, her show will encourage viewers to escape from the very bad world, "to laugh with us" (not one genuinely amusing thing happened in this first episode), to which Kelly added her wish that viewers will enjoy "a smile, sometimes a tear, and maybe some hope to start your day".

However, in Kelly's defense, CNN did note that she was a polished interviewer who was working hard at being herself.

The show's launch was many months in the making and comes nearly 9 months after NBC lured Kelly away from Fox News.

"Here's to the newest addition of our family, here's to many happy mornings, here's to Megyn Kelly Today", Lauer said, raising his glass.

"We have the entire cast of "Will and Grace" here live, along with the show creators".

There she was mounting a charm offensive - fielding questions from the audience, receiving flowers from her husband and warmly yukking it up with the cast and producers of "Will & Grace", in an interview that wouldn't have looked out of place on any other daytime talk show or "Access Hollywood".
