Mount Agung photos: Tens of thousands flee Bali volcano 'about to erupt'

Indonesian authorities raised the alert level for Mt. Agung in Bali to level 4, the highest alert level classification, signifying the possibility of volcanic eruption.

Indonesian officials said more than 120,000 people have evacuated Bali as authorities warned a volcano could erupt in "a matter of hours".

Officials have said that 122,490 people have left in fear and there are 500 makeshift shelters, the government said that they were prepared despite the rise in people evacuating the area.

"I don't know where my kids will sleep and all I can do now is pray", said Gusti Gege Astana, 40.

He added that other units from the joint team were scouting locations where temporary cattle pens could be built, while identifying local sources of food and water for the cattle.

Shelters have opened on the island as thousands within a specified danger zone have been evacuated.

Kasbani, head volcanologist said: "If we look at the magnitude, it continues to increase, yesterday we also felt several quakes with the magnitude of three on the Richter scale".

Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) said it was the first time in living memory that an island's whole population had been moved because of volcanic activity.

The Manaro Voui volcano, which last erupted in 2005, sent up a plume of steam and ash over the weekend, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.

The global airport of Denpasar, Bali's capital city, which welcomes every year millions of tourists, is not affected for the time being.

The last time Bali's Mount Agung volcano erupted, a stream of molten lava flattened teenage Gusti Nyoman Dauh's home, while cascading ash, rocks and hot gas killed 1,600 of his neighbours.

The volcano, on the island of Bali less than 50 miles from the resort of Kuta, showed unprecedented levels of internal seismic activity this week.
