Air France flight with engine damage makes emergency landing in Canada

An Air France flight from Paris to Los Angeles was forced to make a sudden emergency landing after it lost part of an engine over the Atlantic ocean.

Air France confirmed that the plane had suffered "serious damage" to one engine, and its crew had "handled this serious incident perfectly".

The airline said the plane landed safely Saturday afternoon after being diverted to Goose Bay airport as a precaution in response to a technical issue.

"One flight will be aboard an Air France B777-300, and the other aboard a B737, an aircraft specially chartered by Air France", the airline said.

Shortly after the incident occurred, passengers on board the flight posted images of the damaged engine on social media.

The aircraft was flying at 37,000 feet and had just crossed Greenland when the engine failure happened.

Air France said an investigation is underway "to shed light on this serious incident", involving representatives from Air France, Airbus and the French Aviation Accident Investigation Bureau.

Engine Alliance is a joint venture between engine makers General Electric and Pratt & Whitney.

The A380 is among the increasingly rare breed of airliners powered by four engines. According to first testimonies of passengers collected by the public tv, canadian CBC, a detonation was heard, followed by a stall of the aircraft, the crew quickly mastered.

The cause of the problem was unknown, with one of the plane´s passengers suggesting that a bird might have collided with the engine which was damaged.
