Akhilesh Yadav re-elected SP national chief for five years

A proposal to nominate Akhilesh as party chief by extending the term to five years was passed by the national convention of the party on Thursday.

The announcement was made by SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav at the party's national convention in Agra.

It may be mentioned here that at the SP's national convention on January 1 this year, Akhilesh displaced his father as party chief.

The re-election of Akhilesh Yadav means he will lead the party into the next Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.

"I talked to him (Mulayam) yesterday and today also before coming to the convention". Poor people of the country were the worst hit by demonetization and we plan to reach out to our trader friends who have suffered losses in business due to the implementation of GST (goods and services tax). This was later followed with Akhilesh meeting his father during which Mulayam is believed to have advised him to take older party members along with him.

Much along the expected lines, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was today unanimously chosen as the party's national president for a five-year term. Dimple Yadav, MP and wife of Akhilesh, also thanked Mulayam and said, "Blessings of netaji are there with the SP resident (Akhilesh), me and the entire party".

SP sources said that a section of the party was trying to broker a truce in the SP family and persuade Shivpal to accept Akhilesh's leadership in exchange for the post of general secretary.

However, Shivpal Yadav quelled any speculations of a rift in the party as he congratulated Akhilesh Yadav on twitter. He later also telephonically spoke to his estranged uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav on Wednesday evening, after nine months, to invite him for the party meet. This claim was however dismissed by the party patriarch on 25 September.
