Andrea Pirlo announces decision to retire

Unfortunately for all you Pirlo fans out there, "the time has come." according to the man himself, Andrea will retire in 2017.

Italy legend Andrea Pirlo has defended the Azzurri's poor form and rejected claims the state of football in his homeland is in poor health.

"Every single day you have physical problems, you can't train as you wish because there is always an issue. I'll do something else".

The 38-year-old enjoyed some of his best years under Conte at Serie A giants Juventus, where the pair enjoyed lots of success.

"At 38 it is right to give young players the space to develop, I'm not angry, instead I will look to help my teammates and the coach".

There have been suggestions Pirlo could reunite with former coach Antonio Conte at Chelsea to work as his assistant, but he insists he has not made a decision on what his future hold.

The New York FC star was also asked his thoughts on the situation of AC Milan and Vincenzo Montella and Pirlo backed the Italian to remain in charge of the Serie A giants.

He added: "I do not know yet, I'll be back in Italy already in December, Conte's deputy, they say things, I have ideas, but give me time to decide".

With the Rossoneri, Pirlo developed into a world-class talent, winning two league titles and the Champions League in 2003 and 2007 as he collected nine trophies in 10 years.

Pirlo, a 2006 World Cup victor, has previously worked under Conte for Juventus and the Italy national side.

"I repeat: for now I do not have that intention. To keep fit I will play golf and tennis".

He won 116 senior caps for Italy, winning the World Cup in 2006 and reaching the final of Euro 2012.
