NFL's Roger Goodell: 'We believe everyone should stand for the National Anthem'

President Trump escalated his battle with pro football players protesting the national anthem by urging the government Tuesday to end use of tax-exempt municipal bonds used to build or renovate National Football League stadiums.

The NFL said in a statement that Trump statement in the tweet is "not accurate". Wasn't it marvelous that the owners and players were so united?

First, Trump issued a "big salute" to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for saying he'd bench anybody who did not stand, before questioning the NFL's special tax status, saying this should be revoked if players continued "disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country". Players sitting or kneeling are protesting against racial injustice and police brutality against African-Americans.

On Sunday, Vice President Mike Pence walked out of an Indianapolis Colts game after players took a knee during the anthem.

"It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY", Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. It is an important moment in our game.

Goodell has said that the protests concerning the anthem are "threatening to erode the unifying power of our game, and is now dividing us, and our players, from many fans across the country". With his letter, Goodell likely hopes to improve league morale, as well as boost viewership. Commissioner Goodell spent yesterday with Miami Dolphins players, law enforcement and community leaders witnessing first-hand the outstanding work our players and clubs are doing to strengthen their communities.

Writing that he expects a "full and open discussion" of the issues next week in New York, Goodell closes with, "The NFL is at its best when we ourselves are unified".
