Grandfather finds old lottery ticket worth $24000000 in shirt pocket

The New York Lottery is reporting that Jimmie Smith, 68, has claimed his prize that was due to expire in 48 hours.

Smith said he needed some time after finding the $24 million victor "to clear out some cob webs" before making the trip to the Lottery's lower Manhattan Customer Service Center to claim the ticket.

The lucky lottery ticket victor is Jimmie Smith from East Orange, New Jersey.

However, he saw a news story in May about lottery officials searching for a mystery victor.

The retired security guard told lottery officials he's been buying lottery tickets since the 1960s but doesn't usually rush to see whether he's won. "I'll check them when I have the time", the New Jersey man would often tell himself, according to CNN. He nearly missed out on the big winnings, as the one-year deadline for claiming the prize approached.

The retired security guard told lottery officials he's been buying lottery tickets in NY and New Jersey since the 1960s but doesn't rush to see whether he's won. As to how many of those lucky winners will pocket their money or cash it in to buy more lottery tickets? I was in serious doubt.

The New York Gaming Commission said the winning numbers in the May 25, 2016 draw were 5, 12, 13, 22, 25 and 35.

"I stood there for a minute thinking, 'Do I see what I think I see?"

Thankfully, he had enough time to claim his prize and will be receiving the money over the next 26 years. Smith, a father of two and grandfather of 12, said he plans to have an "all-family discussion" about what to do with the windfall.
