EU Imposes New Sanctions on North Korea

Foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg signed a new package of measures, including a ban on investments in North Korea and on exports of oil to Pyongyang, AFP reported.

The European Union imposed new sanctions on North Korea Monday as part of worldwide efforts to punish Pyongyang for its nuclear and ballistic weapons programs. The steps were taken in view of the "persistent threat to worldwide peace and stability" posed by North Korea's government, the European Union said. An unnamed member of North Korea's delegation responded to a question whether there were plans for his delegation and the South Korean delegation to meet, saying, there were "No such plans yet".

The spokesperson added: "Should Australia continue to follow the USA in imposing military, economic and diplomatic pressure upon the DPRK despite our repeated warnings, they will not be able to avoid a disaster".

But Ms Bishop played down the prospect of any military strikes on Australia, and labelled North Korea's behaviour "provocative, illegal and threatening".

"Should Australia continue to follow the U.S. in imposing military, economic and diplomatic pressure upon the DPRK despite our repeated warnings, they will not be able to avoid a disaster", state-run news agency KCNA warned in a statement on Saturday.

"We are determined to build up our nuclear forces until peace in struggle with the United States is secured", he added.

In addition to successfully testing a hydrogen bomb, Kim made headlines in July for overseeing the launches of North Korea's first two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

"We will continue to do everything we can to protect and help and support our allies".

The allies sought to compel the rogue country back to the negotiating table over its nuclear weapons programs.

"The North Koreans should do what the global community have asked them to do - obey all the security council resolutions which have been passed, condemning their missile activity, condemning their attempts to build nuclear weapons".
