Amazon's Bezos world's richest, again

People who can remember as far back as July of this year know that it's a title Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has picked up and dropped again in the past, and now the fluctuations of the financial sphere have given it to him once more: The richest person in the world.

Jeff Bezos is on track to become the world's richest person.

At the end of trading on Thursday, Gates occupied the top spot in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, with a net worth of $88 billion. Gates, 61, has been the world's richest person since 2013.

The stock soared after the company reported quarterly sales and profit that surpassed analysts' estimates following the USA market close on Thursday.

Bezos owned almost 80 million shares in Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) as of August, according to the most recent available data from FactSet.

Inc shares surged today, lifting its founder's net worth by US$7.8 billion to US$91.3 billion as of 10am in NY, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He would be worth about US$150 billion if he hadn't made the donations. However, Bill Gates remained at the top position thanks to a 7 per cent spike in Microsoft's stock overnight. The spike in the company's stock was boosted by a strong third-quarter report that beat expectations. In 2017, the billionaire couple gave away $4.6 billion worth of shares in charity, making it their second biggest donation after $16 billion which they donated in 1999.
