Police Departments Across Region Participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The federal Drug Enforcement Administration is partnering with local law enforcement in the Greater St. Louis area to take back unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday. Over the past seven years, these agencies have offered two opportunities per year; this year is the 14 prescription drug take-back day. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the USA are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs, according to the release. The president's national health emergency declaration opens certain federal funds to drug treatment groups, among other things. People wishing to dispose of medications can do so between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Police officials will accept pills and other solid forms of medication, but will not accept liquids, needles or sharps. "Keeping unused, unnecessary, or expired medication in homes increases the risk of it being abused". The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

According to a 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs.

"There are awful unintended consequences associated with keeping unused prescription drugs in the home", Attorney General Hunter said.

Those unable to get out to the event on Saturday should go onto the website: www.takebackday.dea.gov, where information is available on the proper disposal of unused medicines, Pomeroy said.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
