Lawmakers slam social media giants for fake news and Russian ads

Although one lawmaker, Rep. Adam Schiff, described the ads as a "representative sample" of the broader cache of Facebook ads, the decision to release only a small subset of the trove of ads seemed to walk back a pledge from members of the House.

This ad, sponsored by a fake group called Army of Jesus, called Clinton a Satan whose "crimes and lies had proved just how evil she is".

Facebook has been warning for more than a year about reaching a limit in "ad load", or the number of ads the company can feature in users' pages before crowding their News Feed.

Below, a look at some of the ads released Wednesday, and some of the key information about each ad, including how much they cost and how many people may have seen them. It was shown in Facebook users' feeds nearly 35,000 times and was clicked on 6,000 times.

Muslims. Undocumented immigrants. Black Lives Matter activists.

Net income rose to US$4.71 billion, or US$1.59 per share, from US$2.63 billion, or 90 cents per share. The ad featured pictures of African-American people shot by police, and contained the message, "Join us because we care".

Silicon Valley giants faced aggressive grillings by the Senate and House Intelligence Committees Wednesday over the role their platforms have inadvertently played in Russia's meddling in USA politics.

This is one of the Russian Facebook ads meant to stir dissention in the U.S. The pro-Texas page-called Heart of Texas-encouraged its 253,000 followers to gather at an Islamic Center in the city on that day to stop the "Islamization of Texas", while a "United Muslims of America" page, which had 328,000 followers, pushed an event at the same time and place, calling on supporters to "Save Islamic Knowledge". The account also promoted Florida Trump rallies.

If so, you were likely being targeted by the Russia-backed ads that have been in the news lately.

"Satan: If I win Clinton wins!". Trump on the other hand, may not be a "saint", but "he's at least an honest man and he cares deeply for this country". The post accompanying the image read in part, "Hillary is a Satan. My vote goes for him!"

The political ads also tried to lure in Christian worshippers.

According to the committee, the equivalent of only $1 was spent on the ad, generating 71 impressions and 14 interactions.
