Gunman kills 27 during Sunday church service in Texas, shooter dead

Sutherland Springs is in Wilson County, about 30 miles east of San Antonio.

A gunman opened fire inside the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs Sunday, killing and injuring multiple people, authorities said.

Sheriff Joe Tackitt said there have been multiple fatalities from Sunday's incident, including the gunman.

President Donald Trump tweeted from Japan that he is monitoring the situation.

About 860 people lived in the Sutherland Springs area as of 2010, according to the U.S. Census.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is calling a reported shooting at a church in a small town outside San Antonio an "evil act". The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene.

He said more details would be released by the Texas Department of Public Safety shortly.

Keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers and grateful for our courageous first responders on the scene.

Devin Keen, another local officer, said "there were kids involved" in the shooting, including a two-year-old.

The shooter is dead, police said, and there is no active threat on the scene. Sunday's incident comes just five weeks after the deadliest mass shooting in recent USA history shook Las Vegas, with 58 people killed.

It was not immediately known who carried out the attack on the First Baptist Church at 11.30am local time.

It appears that there are 27 confirmed deaths from the awful attack and dozens more injured.

Pictures and video on social media show a large police and paramedic presence.

Rescue helicopters have been called to the scene to rush victims to hospital.
