Zimbabwe's Mugabe sacks vice-president Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe's information minister has announced the dismissal of Emmerson Mnangagwa as vice president for showing "traits of disloyalty".

Mnangagwa is a favourite to succeed the 93-year-old president.

Mugabe expelled Mnangagwa on Monday afternoon for alleged disloyalty, disrespect and deceitfulness.

Simon Khaya Moyo said on Monday that President Robert Mugabe, 93, has fired the vice president who had always been viewed as his successor.

His removal will boost the presidential ambitions of Mr Mugabe's wife Grace, 52, who told supporters at a stadium in the capital city of Harare on Sunday that she was ready to take over.

Mnangagwa had been vice president since 2014 when his predecessor, Joice Mujuru, was sacked for allegedly plotting to oust Mugabe.

Mr Mnangagwa had been part of Mugabe's cabinet since independence in 1980.

Earlier this morning, Zimbabwe awoke to news that the President, Robert Mugabe had convened a press conference where he sought to sack his deputy.

At the weekend, both Mugabe and his wife used political rallies to suggest that Mnangagwa would be fired.

Mnangagwa was appointed vice-president in 2014, taking over from Joice Muguru, who was axed after Grace launched a campaign accusing her of plotting to topple the president.

"So I have said to the president: 'You can also leave me in charge, '" she said.
