Google Is Adding Restaurant Wait Times to Search Results

Coming soon, Google Search and Google Maps will show estimated wait times for almost a million sit-down restaurants across the world, the company announced today.

Google is already showing a lot of information about businesses, from the basics like opening hours through to what their busiest times are.

If weird food trends (cronut, anyone?) have taught us anything it's that people are prepared to wait a long time for a seat at a restaurant, so whether you're visiting a popular local eatery or Time Out's latest gastro-pick, you're faced with two choices. Here, you'll see the estimated wait time for the current time, as well as for other time periods.

Average wait times for about 1 million restaurants are coming to search results on Tuesday. The information will be added to the Google Maps app in the near future.

Google's new restaurant wait times also comes from the aggregated and anonymized data from users who opted in to Google Location History - the same data that powers popular times, wait times and visit duration.

The company also appears to be rolling out wait time listings for grocery stores, which shows how long it will take for customers to check out, according to a company support page.

Google Maps and Search have received some handy new features throughout the year, but this newest addition might be the best one yet.
