Fidget spinners sold at Target contain high lead levels, advocacy group says

However, according to group's lab tests, the center circle of Fidget Wild Premium Spinner "Brass" has 33,000ppm, while the lead level in another model the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner "Metal" had 1,300ppm.

Consumer group U.S. PIRG is asking Target to recall two types of fidget spinners for possibly containing unsafe amounts of lead.

U.S. Public Interest Research Group tested the "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner" and found the brass version contains up to 300 times the lead allowed in children's toys.

The limit for lead is 100 parts per million (ppm) in toys.

"Alarmingly, when PIRG notified the CPSC about the elevated lead levels in the fidget spinners, the CPSC responded in an email that these fidget spinners are general use products, not children's products", the group said in its report.

"We reviewed the information that PIRG provided with our product safety team".

An Oregon mom is warning parents against buying fidget spinners for their kids after finding a concerning level of lead on the popular toy. "As a result, the fidget spinners identified are not regulated as toys or children's products and are not required to meet children's product standards". The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) makes clear that any amount of lead in a child's blood is unsafe and since the effects of lead exposure can not be reversed, it is important to prevent lead exposure to children in the first place.

U.S. PIRG says everyone needs to stop pretending that kids don't use fidget spinners, and that Target should issue a recall for the affected Fidget Wild Premium Spinner products, which it even advertises on its website as being "framed as a toy".

PIRG Education Fund provided photos of the fidget spinners alongside Star Wars and My Little Pony toys as evidence that while they may be labeled "14-plus", they are sold alongside children's toys in stores. "And, yes, they are toys".

However, after Target and the manufacturer were provided the results of US PIRG's findings, they decided not to pull the toys from their shelves or from their website. "All of our product (s) are tested and comply with CPSC safety standards".

"There's no argument here and any parent will tell you, that this is being marketed as a children's toy and being sold that way", said Elise Orlick with WASHPIRG.
